Mapping the root cause

Sensory‑Motor Mapping is a practical assessment that looks beneath behaviour to see how core systems — balance, coordination, body awareness, and sensory processing — are interacting to support a child’s learning, emotion, and behaviour. Many learning, emotional, and behavioural difficulties trace back to immaturities in these foundational systems. We map them so we can target the root causes, not just surface symptoms.

How we assess (playful, child‑friendly approach)

  1. We use structured play tasks and observations designed to reveal how foundational systems perform in real situations.
  2. Tasks are age‑appropriate, engaging, and repeated to check consistency.
  3. We note movement patterns, regulation, attention, and how the child responds to sensory input.
  4. Where relevant, we include brief standardised checks or screening tasks to quantify immaturities.

When we recommend an auditory processing check

If a child’s difficulties include attention, reading, spelling, speech clarity, or sound sensitivity, we may suggest a targeted hearing assessment. Typical hearing screens only detect hearing loss; they do not evaluate how the brain processes sound. An auditory processing check examines how the child interprets, filters, and integrates sound — skills that are essential for language and learning.

Common auditory processing signs we look for include;

  • Sound sensitivity that disrupts concentration or emotional regulation.
  • Inconsistent or distorted hearing across frequencies that makes phonics, spelling, and reading harder.
  • Uneven auditory processing between ears that slows comprehension and response.

These patterns can affect speech, language development, classroom listening, and literacy.

Outcomes you will receive

  • A clear, written report describing immature systems.
  • A feedback session to explain findings, answer questions, and co‑create next steps.
  • Recommendations: An individualised programme of evidence based interventions, play‑based activities, family strategies, and/or school adaptations.

We focus on building foundational skills so learning, behaviour, and emotional regulation become easier and more sustainable.
